Vitamin P (bioflavonoids)

Applications:
Bruising, varicose veins, spider veins, arthritis, hemorrhaging, cholesterol levels, herpes, cataracts, inflammation, phlebitis, bleeding gums, blood clots, colds, scurvy, hemorrhoids, edema, hypertension, hemophilia.

Scientific Data:
The profound value of bioflavonoids is beginning to emerge in scientific circles. While technically not vitamins, over 64 varieties are found in the white portion of citrus fruit peel and in pine bark and grape seeds. Bioflavonoids act as antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatory agents. They should be taken with vitamin C as they increase its absorbability.

Depleting Agents:
Aspirin, alcohol, cortisone, antibiotics, smoking, some pain killing drugs.

Sources:
Citrus fruits, onions, parsley, berries, green tea, legumes, grape seed extract.

Interactions:
Naringin can interfere with the action of caffeine, coumarin and estrogens and can enhance the effect of nifedipine, varapramil, felodipine and terfenadine. This flavonoid is found in grapefruit juice.

Recommendations:
Bioflavonoids refer to compounds such as quercitin, naringin, rutin, hesperidin, grape seed extract, etc. Proanthocyanidins, which are found in pine bark or grape seed extract, are also flavonoid compounds and have some impressive therapeutic effects. Look for quality pure products which offer a combination of bioflavonoid types without fillers.
