They are extreme views drawn from extreme examples and applied way out of context. They are propagandizing and clearly designed to frighten, not educate. All of The fears and concerns associated with The overconsumption of sugars and calories in general have been unfairly cast on agave.
What is a "healthy" sweetener? One that you use moderately and sensibly.
Health concerns related to fructose and caloric sweeteners are all dependant on The overconsumption of Them. All foods have calories and it is The overall consumption of calories that lead to obesity and related issues, not any one food source.
Agave's caloric value is comparable to The oTher sweeteners in The category. Due to its greater sweetness though, less agave is used compared to The oThers, so agave actually can reduce caloric consumption per serving. This is due to a higher fructose content. The higher content does not mean higher consumption though, due to The smaller portion used. But, it is not The single serving that matters, it is The number of servings which lead to The overconsumption issues which may result in health concerns.
As a reference point, 9-10 teaspoon servings of agave would be The approximate caloric equivalent of one 16 oz soft drink. With this perspective, is agave really being overconsumed as a choice of sweetener for home use?

That article, written by Rami Nagel and published on Naturalnews.com, was highly biased and full of inaccuracies, half-truths and misinformation about agave. Since The Naturalnews.com article has been The sole source of nearly all oTher popular articles in public media, we want to set The record straight with science-based, reliable information to offer a more balanced resource to those interested in learning more about agave syrup. Who is The author, Rami Nagel?
According to The description on The Naturalnews.com website, Rami Nagel is a "citizen journalist". This means that Mr. Nagel is self-employed, and not employed as an in-house journalist by The website. He wrote and published The article without any editorial or content oversight, and The editor of The website, Mike Adams, makes it clear that The article was not checked for incorrect or inaccurate information or facts. The introduction to The article, written by Mr. Adams, states that readers had written to comment that Mr. Nagel's resources were biased with conflicts of interest due to Their financial interests in competing sweeteners, such as brown rice syrup. So even The website editor himself states that The article is not fact-checked, and it is biased and unbalanced.
Who is Russ Bianchi?
The sole resource interviewed for The article is Russ Bianchi, identified by The author as Managing Director and CEO of Adept Solutions, Inc. Mr. Bianchi has clear conflict of interest ties to The sweetener industry. We have documentation of The fact that Mr Bianchi had plans to market a product named Replace. It was to be touted as a low calorie alternative sweetener composed of natural and artificial ingredients! Mr Bianchi was prevented from marketing this sweetener as The result of a lawsuit against him by The owner of The formula.
Mr Bianchi is quoted by Nagel extensively and exclusively. Many, if not all, of his statements are blatantly false or misrepresentations of fact. He is clearly propagandizing against agave nectar.

Yes. Craig Gerbore, president and owner of Madhava Agave Syrup, was extensively interviewed by The author but no parts of that interview were included in The article.
It is important to note that neiTher Mr Nagel or Mr Bianchi have not made Themselves available for questions on Their statements since The articles appearance. They remain out of sight and have entirely avoided The controversy Their statements created.
What is agave nectar?
The opening line of this paragraph in The article by Mr. Nagel states:
"The principal constituent of The agave is starch, such as what is found in corn or rice."
This is absolutely false. There is no starch in agave. The source of carbohydrate in agave syrup is inulin, a polysaccharide made up primarily of strings of fructose units. Starch is a polysaccharide made up of strings of glucose molecules. They are significantly different, and this difference is why agave syrup is naturally sweet.
The very basis of The argument presented by Mr. Nagel is false.
The agave plant is a succulent, similar to a cactus. The agave sweetener comes from both The Salmiana agave plant and The agave Tequilana (Blue Agave) which are both organically farmed in Mexico and certified organic by USDA approved certifiers. As The salmiana plant grows it produces a stalk called The "quiote" and when this is removed, a natural liquid called "aquamiel". The liquid is collected from The plant, while Blue agave pinons are harvested and shredded to remove The similar juice. EiTher can be naturally processed Thermally or by enzymes into agave nectar.
The juice of The plant is not naturally sweet. The string of connected fructose units that makes up The major proportion of inulin does not have a sweet taste, but when The fructose units are separated (The process is called hydrolysis) by The addition of an enzyme, similar to digestion, or Thermally for most blue agave, The syrup becomes quite sweet. That is The entire processing chain for agave nectar. There are no additives, oTher ingredients or chemicals in Madhava agave nectar. It is absolutely pure and organic and GMO free.
? Mr. Nagel claims that agave syrup is a "refined corn fructose" similar to high fructose corn syrup. This is absolutely false. There is no relationship between agave syrup and high fructose corn syrup in any way, including The source of The product, or The manufacturing process.
? Mr. Nagel refers to a "confidential FDA letter" from Mr. Martin Stutsman, claiming that agave is fraudulently labeled. In fact, Mr. Nagel fabricated The entire story of The letter. Mr. Stutsman is a lawyer, not a doctor. The quotes were completely taken out of context from The document, and The quotes never referred to agave syrup at any time. Nagel goes on to furTher misrepresent Mr. Stutsman's intent in The published document by weaving in oTher inaccurate information that is thoroughly unrelated to The original document. Mr Bianchi's subsequent statements on labeling issues are false and without merit.
Mr. Nagel is clearly caught red-handed. He has misrepresented The words of a government official, lied about The facts, and twisted The information to achieve his own agenda. This strategy is repeated throughout The article.
? Mr. Nagel continues his deceptive writing by referring to a quote by The late Dr. Varro Tyler in his book, The Honest Herbal. The first line of The paragraph is a direct quote from The book. Nothing else in that paragraph remotely resembles anything else found in Dr. Tyler's book. Mr. Nagel is trying to claim that agave syrup contains large quantities of saponins, and that They can be harmful to health. Here is The debunking of that paragraph:

3. There is no documented evidence to suggest agave syrup contains worrisome levels of saponins and The entire rest of The discussion about health dangers is fabricated and false.
People are going to continue to consume sweet food and drink. There are only three categories of choice to sweeten food. Those are artificial sweeteners, stevia, or caloric sweeteners from natural sources, sugars.
Most people will not choose artificial. Many will not choose stevia. That only leaves The category of sugars. In this group, agave is a good choice due to its organic quality, ease of

Fructose and levulose are exactly The same thing; The names are interchangeable. It is no different than if you called your faTher, "dad", and your sibling called your faTher, "faTher". He would still be The exact same person. Fructose and levulose are different names for The exact same thing: a sugar found in nature.
Mr. Bianchi also is quoted to say that The body does not recognize The fructose in agave. This is anoTher false piece of propaganda which demonstrates just how far he is reaching. If this were true, it would have no impact on us. He immediately contradicts himself with The claims of detrimental effects caused by The overconsumption of fructose.
Sugars can be compared to each oTher in Their ability to raise blood sugar levels by using The Glycemic Index. The scale is set from zero to 100, where low numbers do not have much impact on blood sugar levels, and high numbers raise blood sugar levels quickly. Fructose is very low on The scale. Because agave syrup is high in fructose, it has a rating of 32 or lower. Honey, which has a higher proportion of glucose to fructose, has a Glycemic Index of 58. Sucrose has a Glycemic Index of 68, and glucose, serving as The index standard, is 100.

Food offers us not only sustenance, but also pleasure and enjoyment. Food is present in so many parts of our lives: at celebrations, business events, family events, religious and spiritual occasions, sports outings, The focus of our family meals, intimate dinners, and sometimes just The excuse to socialize.
Sweet foods make us feel good. Sugar allows for The elevation of serotonin in our brains, The "feel good" neurotransmitter that elevates mood, helps us focus, and in The evening, helps us relax and sleep.
Sugar is a source of energy for our muscles, brain and central nervous system. Without sugar our bodies will not function at peak capacity.
Too much sugar, however, is not good. In small amounts sugar energizes us, but in large doses, repeated throughout The day, day in and day out, sugar puts stress on The body. The extra calories can lead to weight gain and obesity, which in time can lead to chronic disease. In The short term, high sugar intakes can lead to a nutritionally deficient diet and a sense of being on an emotional roller coaster.
So be selective about your use of sugars and use Them in moderation in your diet. Just like all foods, a variety will enhance The nutritional content of your diet and The flavor and tastes that you can enjoy. Since sugars come in different forms and have different flavors, They can be used most effectively in specific foods and beverages. If They do not disclose conflicts, Then assume that They are manipulating The truth.
Most of all enjoy food. Think about what you need to eat to promote whole health. Don't overindulge, but don't deprive yourself of The bounty of wonderful tastes, eiTher. Use celebrations as occasions to enjoy your favorite foods and try new ones. A teaspoon or two of sugar easily fits into The diet of an active, healthy person. If a crucial part of The DNA is destroyed and The abnormal cells cannot be controlled any longer, cancer forms. All cancer cells have two things in common: growing uncontrollably and having The ability to metastasize. The immune system does not recognize cancer cells as dangerous or foreign.
Although The exact cause for The cell damage that initiates The cancer process is unknown (Theoretically free radical damage causes DNA damage), The chain of events that leads to cancer is very complex, and each individual body reacts differently. It is a combination of genetic, behavioral, environmental, and lifestyle factors that are thought to be involved in turning normal cells into abnormal cells, and abnormal cells into cancer.

Inositol And Choline

Inositol is a member of The vitamin B complex family, being referred to as vitamin B8, but is not strictly a vitamin because it is biosynThesized in your body. Vitamins are essential substances that are not manufactured by your natural biochemistry, and must be taken in your diet. However, to all intents and purposes it works like a member of The vitamin B family.
The main function of myo-inositol (The commonest isomer of inositol) is in The health of cell membranes, particularly those that comprise The marrow, eyes, intestines and The brain. Without proper regulation of The cell membrane, The cell cannot function effectively. Some of its effects include healthy hair and controlling estrogen levels. It is also believed to help to reduce cholesterol levels in The blood.
A deficiency will result in hair loss, eczema, increased blood cholesterol levels and eye abnormalities. You might also suffer constipation, although this is not as serious a condition as those preceding. It is present at highest levels in The heart and brain, which indicates where it is mostly used, although it also helps The liver to break down fats and enables The nerves and muscles to operate as They should.
Those that are depressed are frequently found to have low inositol levels in Their spinal fluid, so it is believed to play a part in that condition. It is known that The substance takes part in The function of The neurotransmitter serotonin, which is known to play a part in depression, and initial signs are that its use in The treatment of depression could be effective. Neurotransmitters are responsible for passing messages across The gap (synapses) between nerve cells, Their messages being decoded by The neuroreceptors. A healthy nervous system depends on healthy neurotransmitters.
For These reasons, inositol has also been tried on oTher conditions of The nervous system. These include bipolar disorder, bulimia, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and attention deficit disorder. So far, results have been inconclusive as to its effectiveness, but it is early days yet and field tests are continuing.
A test carried out in Beersheva, Israel, in 1997, found that treatment with inositol produced significant improvement in The depression of 28 patients after four weeks on The Hamilton Depression Scale1, and 21 patients tested with panic disorder (with and without agoraphobia) showed significant improvements in Their condition, including agoraphobia. Results on 13 patients with obsessive compulsive disorder also showed significant improvement. These were all double-blind tests.
However, not all tests have been so conclusive, and a study on 42 people with sever depression who did not respond to conventional antidepressant, also failed to respond when inositol was added to Their medication.2 Results are Therefore not conclusive.
Four hundred people took part in a double-blind test that indicated a possible improvement in The symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome when treated with inositol 3,4 and anoTher that inositol treatment on patients taking lithium could help reduce The symptoms of psoriasis, a skin condition believed to be caused by a reaction of The immune system and nerves.5
The supplement has also been found to be just as effective as Luvox (fluvoxamine – similar to Prozac) after four weeks treatment. Although These results are good, They are inconclusive, and more data is need before any indisputable conclusions can be drawn. However, treatment with inositol might be worth considering if conventional treatment for These conditions has been unsuccessful.
The most common natural form of inositol is myo-inositol, an isomer of cyclohehexanehexol, a carbocyclic polyol that form The structural basis for secondary messengers in The cells of eukaryotes.
A secondary messenger system is one whereby a signaling molecule is released in response to a signal from a primary messenger such as a neuroreceptor, which Then activates certain intracellular proteins known as effector proteins that exert a response from The cell. An example is cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) that is a secondary messenger that activates protein kinases and allows Them to phosphorylated proteins.
Eukaryotes are organisms that contain cells composed of complex components contained within a cellular membrane, and that also contain a nucleus. Examples are fungi, plants and all animals. Examples of non eukaryotes include The bacteria family.
It is frequently recommended that inositol is most effective when taken with an equal amount of choline, although this might be due to The fact that when inositol deficiency is detected, choline is also frequently deficient. Both are vitamin B family like, and both are lipotropic, in that They aid The breakdown of fats in The body. It is not clear wheTher this is true or not, but taking both would certainly not harm you, and might be of great benefit.
Inositol is not essential, because it can be obtained from beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, cantaloupe, brewer’s yeast, liver and vegetables. Bacteria in The gut also act on The phytic acid (inositol hexaphosphate) contained in citrus fruits to form inositol.
However, be careful if you drink a lot of coffee. It destroys inositol, and if you are taking The supplement medicinally, steer clear of coffee during your period of treatment because it will lose its effect. Excessive coffee drinking can also result in a general depletion of inositol from your diet, and hence a deficiency. In such a case you are advised to take a supplement, preferably along with choline that might also be deficient.
Although There have been no adverse side effects reported, no specific longer term safety studies have been carried out on inositol. Because of The way it works, inositol should be avoided by people with liver or kidney disease, and also by expectant or nursing women. It should be avoided by young children until safety tests have been carried out, and it is believed that it can cause manic effects in those suffering bipolar disorder.
OTher than for These specific cases, trials with many times The average daily intake of The substance, it currently appears safe to take inositol as a long-term supplement. However, as with all such supplements intended for specific disorders, you should seek The advice of your physician.

Guggul is a natural herb supplement that may help lower cholesterol, yet few in The Western hemisphere know much about it. Guggul is oTherwise known as The Mukul myrrh tree, and is a plant of The Burseracae family with small red or pink flowers.
It is found across central Asia over to North Africa, although is very common in The norThern areas of India where The climate is more semi-arid than equatorial. Guggul does not like a lot of water and can thrive in ground where The soil has few nutrients. Its Latin name is Commiphora wightii, and it grows about 12 feet high.
It has been predominantly used in The Ayurvedic medicine of ancient India, and like many such ancient remedies and treatments, is now used in modern medicine to treat specific conditions: conditions such as some forms of heart condition, where it has been found to be able to lower your blood cholesterol levels, weight loss and some forms of arthritis and oTher inflammatory conditions.
However, it has been used so successfully over The years, particularly in India, which it is now in danger of extinction and is contained in The Red Data List of The World Conservation Union that lists endangered species. So what is so special about this plant that makes it so popular? To get The answer to that we have to go back a bit in its history, although not quite as far as The two or three thousand years that it is known to have been used in traditional Hindu medicine.
The active ingredient is found in The sap of The tree, and is used to fight against obesity and oTher diseases that can be caused by excess weight or cholesterol, such as arthritis, obesity and aTherosclerosis. Until recently it has had very little support for its claims from conventional medicine. It was in The 1960s that an ancient Sanskrit text was found that recommended guggul as a treatment for high cholesterol levels. Since that discovery, research has focused on The plant's anti-cholesterol properties, and a great deal of evidence has been gaThered supporting The claims of that ancient text.
So much so that The Indian government has approved The use of guggul for The treatment of high cholesterol levels, largely because it has been found very effective in reducing The levels of 'bad' LDL cholesterol in The blood while increasing The levels of The beneficial HDL cholesterol. Several trials have supported this, including one study involving 228 patients that showed The extract to be equally as effective as The anti-cholesterol drug clofibrate.
That is not all, and oTher studies included one in which a decrease in LDL cholesterol of almost 13% was measured in a double blind study involving 61 subjects, of which around half received a placebo. An average 12.7% reduction in LDL cholesterol, 12% in triglycerides and 11.7% in total cholesterol was experienced by The group given The guggul extract. Every 1% drop in total cholesterol is associated with a 2% decrease in The risk of heart disease.
Guggul reduces The levels of harmful cholesterol in your blood by converting it into bile. The plant extract contains substances given The name guggulsterones that block The activity of a protein that regulates The metabolism of cholesterol in your body known as FXR (The Farsenoid X Receptor). This protein can increase The risk of you contracting heart disease by preventing The liver from converting cholesterol into bile acids, so that The concentration of cholesterol in your blood continues to build up.
The problem with bile acids is that once They reach a certain concentration in your body, The FXR comes into play and stops more being produced. Guggulsterones prevent The FXR from doing this, and so helps The liver to destroy more cholesterol. There is a reason for The body not allowing too much bile acid to be generated, but for those with excess cholesterol, it is more beneficial for this regulation to be prevented, and more cholesterol to be destroyed by The liver.
It is The resin of The plant that is prized, being extracted from The bark in much The same way as rubber is tapped. It is also used in fragrances and perfumes in addition to its medicinal uses, and The dosage generally recommended is 1500 mg (1.5 grams) twice daily. However, it is not recommended for those suffering liver disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease or any form of diarrhea, and should not be taken by those on beta blockers.
It is not only for its cholesterol-lowering properties that guggul is prized, however. AnoTher property it possesses is its ability to render blood platelets less sticky, and so reduce The risk of coronary disease, and prevent The formation of blood clots and thrombosis.
AnoTher use it has found is in The field of weight loss, where it has been found effective in reducing The weight of obese adults. It does so by The activation of lipolytic enzymes and increased levels of triiodothyronine (T3), believed to be due to The formation of T3 from T4 (thyroxine) in The liver.
T3 increases The metabolic rate, and The rate of The breakdown of glycogen and gluconeogenesis: The biosynThesis of glucose. It also causes cholesterol to be broken down and increases The rate of lipolysis - The breakdown of fats stored in fat cells in The body. Studies have shown that those taking guggul lost up to 6 times The weight of a control group within 15 days, and The practice is going along with The Theory.
Not only that, but when you are on a diet, your body is likely to respond by decreasing levels of triiodothyronine, and so reducing The rate at which fat burns. Hence, your diet does not help you top reduce weight as quickly as it could. Guggul, however, stimulates The production of T3, and so you are not only taking less fat into your body, but are also burning it up at an accelerated rate.
OTher uses to which The resin has been put are based upon its anti-inflammatory properties. It has been found to be an effective treatment for some forms of arthritis and also in The treatment of acne. The active inflammatory ingredient is believed to be myrrhanol A, a polypodane-type triterpene, which would also explain The antioxidant effect of guggulipid on lipid peroxidation.
Guggul is a versatile plant, and a good supplement to take for anybody suffering increased lipid or cholesterol levels, and who wants to increase The weigh-loss effect of Their diet. However, make sure that you purchase a supplement standardized on its guggulipid content.

Garcinia Cambogia is found naturally in India and parts of Asia, and also on The Pacific coast of South and Central America all The way from Peru up to Mexico, and likes a humid forested environment. Also known as Brindall berries, garcinia is believed to act as an appetite suppressant and allows you to lose weight by diminishing your desire for food.
The Malabar tamarind, as it is also known, is about The size of an orange resembling a small pumpkin, and an extract from The fruit and rind is used in several weight loss products. The health risks presented by synThetic diet pills render a natural product extremely attractive were it to be effective. So can Garcia curb your appetite? What is The scientific evidence for it, and what biochemical route would it take?
Although tests on animals have been very positive, human results have been inconsistent. In some double blind tests using a placebo, weight loss was up to three times that of The control, but in oThers There was no apparent difference between those taking garcinia, and those given a placebo. However, doubts have been raised of The validity of some of The negative tests, so what does science tell us?
The active ingredient in The cambogia extract is hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which is a powerful inhibitor of ATP citrate lyase, an enzyme that catalyzes The reaction between citrate and Coenzyme A to Acetyl CoA and oxaloacetate. Since The acetyl CoA is necessary in The synThesis of fatty acids and lipogenesis (The conversion of glucose to fatty acids), Then anything that inhibits The biosynThesis of acetyl CoA must help to reduce The amount of fat stored in your body.
By inhibiting this reaction, that occurs outside The mitochondria so is not a direct part of The Citric Acid Cycle, HCA should Theoretically suppress The formation of fats from carbohydrates, reduce food intake and Thereby induce weight loss. But that is not The only mechanism.
A study at Georgetown University in Washington found that after 8 weeks of taking The garcinia extract, There was a 5.4% reduction in body weight and body mass index, and a significant reduction in low density lipoproteins (LDL) and triglycerides with an associated rise in high density lipoproteins (HDL). This is good news for those suffering from high cholesterol levels, since The LDL lipoproteins are those that carry cholesterol to The major blood vessels, and which when oxidized by free radicals deposit fatty plaques on The artery walls. These plaques constrict The arteries and The resultant aTherosclerosis can lead to cardiac problems and strokes. HDL lipoproteins carry cholesterol back to The liver for destruction, and is known popularly as ‘good cholesterol’.
The studies also indicated modifications to certain indicators of The status of fat deposits in The body and of appetite modifiers in The brain. In this respect They found 38% decreases in serum leptin and increases in serotonin levels of 44%, and The excretion of fat metabolites in The urine increased from between 32% and 104%.
These are significant findings, and furTher research has indicated that HCA helps to suppress appetite. Serum leptin is an indicator of The level of fat stores in The body, and as The leptin levels in The blood reduces, The hypothalamus is given an instruction to increase The appetite so as to increase The fat levels again. However, it is believed that HCA possesses leptin-like properties, and this signal is eiTher not generated or is modulated.
The increase in serotonin has The same effect. It is known that serotonin controls The appetite, although The exact mechanism has not yet been established. What is known is that serotonin activates certain neurons and melanocortin-4 receptors (MC4R) in The brain, that not only curb appetite but also block The effect of oTher neurons that would normally increase appetite by blocking The effect of MC4Rs.
This is how The banned anti-obesity and serotonin inciting drug Fen-Phen operated, and it appears that The hydroxycitric acid in garcinia cambogia extract acts in a similar, but safer, way. The problem with drugs such as Feb-Phen was that They created cardiac problems which could be dangerous to obese people whose hearts might have been weakened.
However, now that The biological pathway by which serotonin controls weight is believed to be known, if not fully understood, The way is becoming clearer as to how safer weight loss pills, acting through appetite suppression, might be developed. It also provides a valid scientific explanation for The effect of garcinia cambogia extract which might in itself prove to be that safer way.
The biochemistry supports The evidence of its effect on those wanting to lose weight, and also bolsters The claims that those tests and trials found to be negative were in some way flawed. Until The full chemical pathway is understood, The factors that can lead to flawed tests are unknown, although one could be The use of excessive fiber in some trials that could reduce The effect of The extract.
One of The effects of HCA is to limit The ability of your body to convert carbohydrates into fat (The Acetyl CoA inhibition mentioned above). That, combined with suppression of your appetite and a higher rate of Thermogenesis, prevents The body from storing excess carbohydrates as fat. Instead you will have increased energy levels, so you should exercise to use this up while taking garcinia extract. For this reason it is popular with athletes and bodybuilders seeking an energy source that has not yet been banned from sport.
Although diet pills based on The same principle had side-effects and could make The user feel on edge, There are none known with garcinia. However, it is possible to reduce The absorption of some essential nutrients due to appetite suppression, so do not exceed The recommended dose. An excessive amount can also led to gastric discomfort, but none of These effects have been noted when The recommended doses have been adhered to.
However, if you are diabetic, pregnant or a nursing moTher, you should consult with your physician or health professional before taking The extract. Garcinia Cambogia presents no specific risk to such people, and this warning should be given for all non-prescriptive treatments that your physician might be unaware of you taking.

We have been told that we must eat a certain amount of fiber with our meals because it is ‘good for us’. Most of us have been led to believe that this is because fiber promotes bowel motions and prevents us from suffering from constipation. It is also good for our digestive system. But how true is this, and just what are The real benefits of fiber in our diet?
First of what, what is fiber? Sure, we know There must be fiber in food such as cabbage, beans and celery because we can see it. But is all fiber actually fibrous? Of course not, so let’s first have a close look at what dietary fiber actually is.
Fiber is composed of These parts of a plant that are broken down by The action of enzymes in our digestive juices in The upper parts of our intestinal tract. Some fiber can be digested by The bacteria in our lower intestine, and some is not. So where does fiber come from? By that definition, fiber can be any part of your food, not only The stringy bits, and by definition are of vegetable origin.
Water insoluble fibers increase fecal bulk. That’s The stringy stuff in celery and string beans. It is also contained in cellulose materials, lignin, wheat bran, whole grains and most vegetables. These have The effect of increasing The efficiency of The peristaltic movement of The intestine on The passage of chyme (The creamy fluid that exits The stomach into The duodenum) through your system.
The liquid and nutrients are progressively removed, and The fiber maintains The bulk needed for peristalsis to work properly. Peristalsis is The rhythmic movement of The intestine that forces your food right from your stomach to your rectum. It is also The basis of some forms of industrial pump that operate on The same principle. Without fiber this pump would be inefficient.
Soluble fiber includes The gum and pectin that are obtained from plant cells. They swell up The chyme, and slow down its rate of travel through The gastrointestinal system, although They have no effect on fecal bulk. Specific examples are oat bran, fruit and most vegetables (all plants contain both). A peach, for example, consists of a skin which is insoluble fiber, and The juicy pulp beneath it which is predominantly soluble fiber.
Although a distinction is made between dietary and crude fiber, They both have Their part to play. The term ‘fiber’ is a wide one and it cannot be said that fiber as a whole imparts a specific health benefit. The benefits of fiber are a combination of those imparted by The full range of types of fiber and Their sources that are contained in The human diet, both crude and dietary, soluble and insoluble.

Butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus) is a member of The lily family, and looks a bit like a holly bush with barbed evergreen leaves and bright red berries in The fall. At one time They were collected, tied togeTher and sold to butchers as brooms to sweep out Their shops.
The stiff leaves were particularly suitable for cleaning out offal and oTher waste products from butchered animals and also for scrubbing butcher’s blocks. It was also used as a deterrent to rodents with Their eyes on The meat! Alternative names are sweet broom, kneeholy and Jew’s myrtle, so named because it was used during The Feast of The Tabernacles as one of The ‘four species’ used in The lulav.
The herb was commonly used in Ancient Greece and Rome, The Greeks using it to reduce swellings of various kinds and The Romans using it to treat varicose veins. It has The same uses today, only The mechanisms are understood better. It has been used for centuries in The Mediterranean area for The treatment of inflammations and problems with The circulation, and The Romans used to mash up The leaves and berries to add to wine, and They also used The roots and rhizome as a medicine by soaking Them in wine. Today, it is illegal to use holly as a decoration in Italy, so butcher’s broom is used instead.

In one very small study of pregnant women who used a topical cream containing butcher's broom, no side effects were seen for eiTher The moTher or The baby. However, very little information is available on how oral butcher's broom might affect a developing fetus, an infant, or a small child. Therefore, its use is not recommended during pregnancy, while breast-feeding, or during early childhood.
Because it tightens blood vessels, butcher's broom may worsen high blood pressure or benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Individuals with eiTher of These conditions should not use any form of butcher's broom without first consulting a doctor. The known side effects have already been stated, and They are fairly mild, but few studies have been made on The herb oTher than in Europe, and The side effects have not been fully explored. It is unlikely; however, that There are any as yet unknown serious side effects since butcher’s broom has been used now for a long time, particularly in Europe.
The term ‘ruscogenin’ is used for The collective mixture of active saponins in butcher’s broom, and many of The supplements are formulated to include from 5 to 15 mg of These. Pitta, The fire dosha, governs The metabolism and body heat. It is responsible for The way we digest our food and how we know right from wrong. An excess of pitta causes anger, ulcers, dyspepsia and criticism. If your pitta is balanced you are a good friend and warm personality.
Kapha provides and maintains The physical elements of The body, such as good joints, healing of wounds and strength. It maintains a strong heart and lungs, and everything physical. It promotes love and forgiveness, but also envy and greed. Too much in an individual causes lethargy, allergies, congestion and weight gain. It is also called The mucus humor.
The three fruits of triphala are amalaki, bhibitaki and haritaki, and togeTher maintain These three doshas in balance. Amalaki, or amla, is used to treat an imbalance in The pitta, or fire humor. It is sour and is exceptionally rich in vitamin C and is Therefore a strong anti-oxidant. It is The highest natural source of this vitamin. It is very bitter with a strong antimicrobial and laxative effect on The digestive system, and is a rejuvenator that promotes long life and boosts The immune system of The body (though The scientific effect was unknown to The ancient exponents of ayurveda). It also possesses an astringent and lubricant effect and used to treat constipation, anxiety and stress.

A. CoQ10 is a natural, fat-soluble nutrient present in virtually all cells. CoQ10 also is known as ubiquinone. That’s because CoQ10 is ubiquitious and exists everywhere There is life. Ubiquinol is The active form of this nutrient. Our bodies convert CoQ10 to ubiquinol – which is The form needed to produce cellular energy. Until recently, it was not possible to use ubiquinol as a supplement because it is very unstable outside The human body. But research has now found a way to keep this molecule stable so it can be successfully taken in supplement form.
Q. If CoQ10 gets converted to ubiquinol anyway, can’t I just take CoQ10?

So for older folks, The 30-50% of people who have The gene that impairs CoQ10 conversion, or for people who have serious health concerns, supplementing with ubiquinol instead of CoQ10 might be The smart choice.
Q. What are The health benefits of CoQ10 and Ubiquinol?
A. There have been many studies showing that CoQ10 is beneficial in treating and preventing heart disease and conditions such as high blood pressure aTherosclerosis (hardening of The arteries), angina, and congestive heart failure (CHF). It’s been shown that heart attacks tend to occur when CoQ10 levels are low in The body. After treatment, angina pectoris (severe chest pain signifying interrupted blood flow to The heart), total arrhythmias (dangerously irregular heartbeats), and poor function in The left ventricle (The essential chamber of The heart) were significantly reduced in The CoQ10 group compared to The placebo group. Total deaths due to sudden cardiac failure and nonfatal heart attacks also were significantly reduced in The CoQ10 group compared with The placebo group.
In anoTher study, CoQ10 was studied in 109 patients with high blood pressure (hypertension). The patients were given varying doses of supplemental CoQ10 with The goal of attaining a certain blood level (greater than 2.0 mcg/l). Most patients were on medications to treat hypertension. Half The patients were able to stop taking some or all of Their prescription drugs at an average of 4.4 months after starting CoQ10. The 9.4% of patients who had echocardiograms, performed both before and during treatment, experienced a highly significant improvement in heart wall thickness and function. This improvement was directly attributed to CoQ10 supplementation.
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a debilitating disease that affects 5 million people in The
And Neurological Health?: A study sponsored by The National Institutes of Health showed that supplementing with CoQ10 in a unique delivery system was associated with a slowing of The progression of Parkinson’s disease. Participants were divided into 4 groups and Their physical skills (coordination, walking, etc) and mental skills were evaluated. Each group Then received 300 mg, 600 mg, or 1200 mg of a special form of chewable CoQ10, or a placebo. The researchers evaluated The participants after 1, 4,8, 12, and 16 months of treatment. Each participant was again scored on motor, mental, and activities of daily living skills.
The results of The study showed that The people who took The highest dosage of CoQ10-1200 mg-experienced The least decline in Their physical abilities. The results were so encouraging that The researchers will be continuing with new studies, suing higher dosages to see if The results can get even better.
Huntington’s disease (HD) is a devastating and degenerative inherited disease that is always fatal. In fact, no oTher medication, drug, or nutritional supplement has ever been shown to cause a decline in The progression of this terrible disease. A study compared CoQ10 against remacemide (an investigational HD drug made by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals), in 347 HD patients who were in The early stages of The disease. Remacemide blocks glutamate, The neurotransmitter scientists think may cause The death of brain cells that occurs in Huntington’s disease. While remacemide had no effect on The progression of HD, CoQ10 showed a trend toward slowing The disease by an average of 15%. This meant The HD group taking CoQ10 was able to handle every day activities of life a little longer than The patients taking remacemide or a placebo. They also were able to focus Their attention better, were less depressed, and less irritable.
The 15% slowing of decline can result in about one more year of independence of HD patients. Needless to say, The gift of an additional year of health in The lives of HD patients is incredibly significant.
