Up to a billion people worldwide may not be getting enough vitamin D, and this is a real problem because vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk of cancer, obesity and other health problems. Meta-analysis published by Current Pharmaceutical Design suggests that getting enough vitamin D can decrease fasting glucose and reduce insulin resistance. Vitamin D can also help moderate your bad cholesterol, as well as reducing your levels of C-reactive protein, which is a sign of inflammation. Key Takeaways: "Three of the most significant risk factors for heart disease are high cholesterol, chronic inflammation, and insulin resistance. Researchers wanted to learn more about whether vitamin D supplementation is a way to lower the risk of heart disease or reduce complications in patients who already have it." May 17, 2019 09:33 AM
Nutritional yeast, with the scientific name Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is sometimes called nooch and is made from beet molasses and sugar cane. This yeast uses sugar for energy in its yeast cells and are believed to help improve digestion. It is rich in nutrients and B vitamins like vitamin B1, B2, B3 and B6 and can also give a rich, nutty, and savory flavor to food; that is why vegans and vegetarians use it often. Even non-vegans can use it for its high nutritional content. It is noted that only fortified nutritional yeast contains the added B vitamins since unfortified yeast contains the vitamins that were produced by the yeast itself but one can buy both the fortified and unfortified varieties and blend them together. It is naturally low in sodium and calories. It is also free of fat, free of gluten, free of sugar and as I said before, vegan. Properly stored it can last for up to two years in the home. Some of the health benefits of nutritional yeast are that it boosts immunity, improves digestion, is a vegan source of vitamin B12 and lowers cholesterol and blood pressure. Key Takeaways: "Vegans and vegetarians use nutritional yeast because it is rich in nutrients and B vitamins, but you can also add it to your diet if you are looking for a natural ingredient with a cheesy, nutty, and savory flavor." Aloe vera can be used for plenty of skin conditions, but new evidence suggests it could be used for blood infections, because of the metabolites in the plant. A Chinese and Japanese study looked at this using mice, and found that aloe metabolites suppressed inflammation, due to reduced nitric oxide level. This is important because sepsis harms the body's own tissues and organs, and can be fatal. Aloe also has other uses, such as skin care, warding off cancer, treating digestive issues, and lowering blood sugar levels. Key Takeaways: "After using various tests to determine inflammation, the Chinese and Japanese research team found that aloe metabolites suppressed the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). Aloe metabolites also decreased the production of proinflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide." Read more: https://www.naturalnews.com/2019-04-17-can-aloe-vera-be-used-to-treat-sepsis.html

May 06, 2019 03:28 PM
Because cancer can quickly accelerate the deterioration of a person’s body, some researchers in China wanted to find out how soy-whey protein blend can help patients with leukemia by considering its effects on protein energy absorption and muscle mass. This is because leukemia patients often experience a decrease in muscle mass and severe protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). Earlier studies have shown that soy-whey protein can promote muscle protein synthesis, so the present researchers wanted to know if it can help leukemia patients before they undergo bone marrow transplant. The patients used in the study were 24 in number and they were divided into two groups. One group took natural diet with soy-whey blended protein (BP) while the second group only took natural diet. From the data it was observed that there was a decrease in protein and energy intake of all the 24 participants. But in the group without the soy-whey diet, there was a significant decrease in muscle-related indicators in half of the patients while 60 percent of the patients who ingested the soy-whey blend protein had muscle mass increase in the arm area. Key Takeaways: "In the ND group without the BP intervention, the researchers observed a significant reduction in muscle-related indicators (i.e., anthropometric variables, muscle strength and serum protein) in more than 50 percent of the patients." Fish is a popular edible. In fact the Food and Agricultural Organization estimates that fish eaters consume up to 163 million tons of the aquatic protein every year. That's a lot of fish to freeze. And, unfortunately, more so than is the case with other popular proteins, fish spoils easily, even when kept on ice. Adding a natural antimicrobial agent, such as the common kitchen spice, black cumin, could be an inexpensive and economy-boosting way to extend the shelf life of vulnerable fish. This premise has actually been tested and proven by researchers at the Firat University in Turkey, where a study that utilized black cumin oil to extend the life of fish fillets proved entirely successful. The study showed that no negative side effects endured from the process. In addition to improving the safety of fish, the researchers noted that the process was environmentally sound as well, as it required less energy. Key Takeaways: "The use of natural antimicrobials such as organic acids, essential oils, plant extracts, and bacteriocins could be good alternatives to ensure food safety." Turmeric and its much-lauded, health-giving component, curcumin, have had a health buzz about them for a long time. The health benefits to those that use turmeric and consequently curcumin, have long been noted. But, though its benefits for a wide array of bodily systems, including the cardiovascular, are not disputed, it has heretofore not been understood if turmeric, or more specifically curcumin, does some of its wonders by lowering lipid levels. The Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University has now performed a meta-analysis of available data, surrounding turmeric and curcumin, as a means of filling the knowledge gap. The researchers began by filtering the data, searching for studies revolving around turmeric, cholesterol and triglycerides. To ensure the data was all the more compelling and germane, the researchers trimmed down the parameters even more, allowing for only those tests that involved subjects laboring under the effects of metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes. In these cases possible negative effects to the heart would prove particularly relevant. The meta-analysis revealed that turmeric and curcumin had positive effects to impart on the levels of serum triglycerides apparent in its user-subjects. The two components also positively impacted the low-density lipo-protein cholesterol levels of the user-subjects. The researchers theorized that positive chemical activity was initiated by the components, thereby causing the beneficial aspects. Other cholesterol and lipid markers were not affected. In general, turmeric and curcumin have been shown to limit oxidative stress and inflammation as well as benefit the blood vessel lining, all of which can prevent a serious cardiac event. Key Takeaways: "Turmeric and curcumin are two substances most known for their wide array of health benefits."
