A new study has found that adding fermented shiitake mushroom to rice bran is effective in inhibiting the growth of Salmonella typhimurium. The study was conducted on mouse organs and it was published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine. This formulation has been hailed as a new antimicrobial food-compatible formulation. The study was conducted on murine macrophage cells and in mice. Before this, it was known that the bioactive compounds in rice brans and in shiitake mushrooms have a lot of potential health benefits in mice, cells, and rodents. When the mycelia cells were compared against non-fermented ones, it was found that the bioactive compounds present in the fermented shiitake mushrooms could not be found in the ones that had not fermented. Further findings showed that the pathogen, Salmonella, was inhibited in infected macrophage cells and in organs in the mouse such as the cecum, mesenteric lymph node, spleen, and the liver. Another finding was that there was increased secretion of the bacteria in the feces in mouse. Overall, this findings show that fermented shiitake mushrooms with rice brans can be used as an antibiotic and antimicrobial food.

Key Takeaways:

  • To carry out the study a team of researchers from Korea and the US tried to understand the effect of shiitake mushroom with rice bran on macrophage cells.
  • The component produced in rice plants are bioactive rice brans and hulls while that produced by mushrooms are bioactive polysaccharides and other compounds.
  • When mushroom mycelia that was fermenting with rice bran cells were inspected it was found that they have bioactive compounds that are absent in the non-fermenting mycelia.

"A study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that a formulation of fermented shiitake mushroom with added rice bran can inhibit the growth of Salmonella typhimurium in infected mouse organs."

Researchers in India had a problem: fungi in grains that are stored in bulk where making people sick. grains once coated with industrial chemicals to prevent this dangerous fungi from forming prevented the food borne illness, but posed a separate threat to human and animal health in their own right. They decided to try peppermint oil, which possesses anti microbial, anti fungus, and anti oxidative properties to coat the grains for storage as a natural and healthy alternative and have had stellar results in not only repelling the fungi, but vermin as well.

Key Takeaways:

  • The fungi, Fusarium Sporotrichoides, causes the blight that ravages important cereal crops in storage like barley, maize, oats, rice, and wheat.
  • When these blight attacks cereals, they cause the cereals to produce a metabolic product that is toxic to animals and humans.
  • Although synthetic chemicals are used to protect these cereals from contamination by the blight, it has been shown that these chemicals are just as toxic to humans.

"Indian researchers believe the essential oil of the plant can serve as a natural fungicide for Fusarium head blight."

Eating too much processed sugar increases your risk of Alzheimer's

According to recent research, people that consume a lot of processed sugars run a greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. What happens is the high sugar levels damage a major enzyme called macrophage migration inhibitory factor. Previous research has already shown that people with diabetes are more likely to develop this disease. However, the most recent research looked at brain samples of people with and without this disease and the process of glycation. It showed that glycation damages the essential enzyme which regulates insulin and the immune response.

Key Takeaways:

  • High sugar levels damage a major enzyme called macrophage migration inhibitory factor or MIF which regulates insulin and the immune system.
  • Recent research shows two brain samples with and with out Alzheimer's disease and the process of glycation with in the body.
  • The processed sugars showed to damage the enzyme MIF which therefore resulted in greater risk of having Alzheimer's disease.

"Research has found that a high intake of processed sugar can raise the risk of Alzheimer’s disease."

Hemp growing in midstate after outlawed for decades

Pen State Extension is performing groundbreaking research into the cultivation of five varieties of hemp, marking the first legal cultivation in the area for 80 years. Hemp is a close relative of marijuana, and this was enough to get it banned even though it does not contain psychoactive THC and has a wide variety of legitimate uses. However, a 2014 Farm Bill legalized growth of industrial hemp for research purposes. Penn State Extensions’s researchers will look at how well different varieties will grow, although they note there is not yet a robust supply chain in place for farmers to sell their hemp.

Key Takeaways:

  • Researchers from Penn State Extension are growing five different varieties of hemp.
  • This hemp does not contain a sufficient amount of the chemical THC to make someone feel high.
  • Lancaster County once had many thriving hemp farms, but the crop was outlawed in 1938.

"For the first time in 80 years, industrial hemp is growing legally in Lancaster County."

Honeybees are necessary for our agriculture they provide an air replaceable service when they cross pollinate crops. Unfortunately, the population of bees has been decreasing and human made a pesticide are a major reason. Studies conducted in fruit flies and early studies and honeybees show that a probiotic can be used to negate the effects of pesticides. Just stopping pesticide use seems a simple solution but crops could also be devastated, that's why the study into probiotics is so important.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bees pollinate about 35% of the world's food crop, therefore, they are essential to our survival.
  • Honeybee mortality has been rising every year, due to direct (pesticide directly killing the bee), or indirect contact (bee carries pesticide back to hive, affecting the whole colony)
  • The probiotic, lactobacilli, can improve immunity, and may help honeybees live longer after pesticide exposure.

"According to a recent study from Lawson Health Research Institute and Western University, probiotics can protect honey bees from the fatal side effects of pesticides that people use to protect their crops."

Subject: How Inflammation Spreads Through the Brain

After a traumatic brain injury, inflammation travels through the brain by releasing inflammatory cells from sacks in the brain's immune cells called miCroparticles. The inflammation, which causes damage, can be found in sections of the brain far from the injury. MiCroparticles are easily spread due to their small size, there is hope that a drug created to target miCroparticles can be used to prevent excessive permanent brain injury after trauma.

Key Takeaways:

  • After a traumatic brain injury, inflammation can spread throughout the brain and cause long-lasting damage.
  • It turns out that inflammation is spread by the release of tiny sacks filled with inflammatory chemicals from immune cells in the brain.
  • Studies in humans that used brain scans, however, have shown that inflammation can spread through the brain following an injury

"After a traumatic brain injury, inflammation can spread throughout the brain and cause long-lasting damage. Now, in a new study done in mice, researchers have identified a way that this inflammation can spread."

Subject: Cooking With Canola Releases More Toxic Cancer-Causing Chemicals Than Any Other Type of Oil

Canola oil is extracted from rapeseed and despite claims that it's healthy, it's actually the worst type of oil you can use. Most canola oil is made from genetically modified Crops and the modification actually increases risks to health including causing cancer. Oil made from rapeseed used to be used as an industrial lubricant and canola can be used as a pesticide. It's important to also know that the oil is hydrogenated and can cause cardiac risks.

Key Takeaways:

  • All cooking oils (other than “cold pressed” or “extra virgin” oils) are refined. This process typically includes degumming; bleaching and deodorizing.
  • Canola oil actually comes from rapeseed, and in the past it was simply known as rapeseed oil. At that stage, rapeseed oil was not used in the food industry.
  • In a nutshell, healthy living and canola oil simply don’t mix. There are far better options available, including organic extra virgin olive oil; organic cold pressed coconut oil, etc.

"In a nutshell, healthy living and canola oil simply don’t go well together."

Since other states are allowed to use hemp for farming, Kansas farmers feel they should be allowed to as well but that is not the case. Since hemp is closely related to marijuana, the police officers in Kansas feel that should be illegal as well. Plus, who is to say they are only going to use it for agricultural reasons. However, if it can be allowed in one state for farming it should be allowed in the others and should only have repercussions if it is abused.

Key Takeaways:

  • Kansas farmers are struggling and want to add another crop
  • Kansas law enforcement wants to fight this because they cannot tell the difference between hempand marijuana
  • Since law enforcement is not budging, Kansas farmers are missing out

"You could smoke a bale of industrial hemp and never want a single Dorito."

Subject: Scientists discover potent trigger of inflammatory disease

Scientists have discovered a potent trigger of inflammatory disease. The inflammatory molecule that is released by dying cells, triggers inflammation during neCroptosis. The discovery could actually lead to new and existing medicines that target the molecule being investigated as a way of treating inflammatory diseases. Psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease are two such diseases.

Key Takeaways:

  • Institute scientists have revealed that a potent inflammatory molecule released by dying cells triggers inflammation during neCroptosis.
  • The discovery challenged a long-standing dogma that inflammation triggered by neCroptosis was a byproduct of dead cell debris.
  • Research suggests that existing drugs that block IL-1 might be useful in treating these diseases.

"NeCroptosis is important for protecting us against infections, by sacrificing infected or diseased cells 'for the greater good'."

Hemp is a really amazing plant. Energy drinks are a huge industry, but most of them are very unhealthy and even illegal to be sold to minors. The government of the United States has outlawed a Crop that was cultivated for 10000 years. However, there has been an easing on the restrictions from both the state and federal levels recently.

Key Takeaways:

  • Energy drinks are a multi-billion dollar industry while at the same time one of the most criticized. Energy drinks are thought of as poison by many with politicians and healthcare professionals alike trying to eliminate the industry.
  • Bills have been passed in the EU and the US to ban sales to minors. I’m not sure why. The only thing that ought to scare is the sugar content. That doesn’t change the fact there are growing health concerns, warranted or not.
  • With the power food hemp, its products have ingredients everyone can read and understand right away: carbonated water, beet sugar, citric acid, guarana extract, caffeine, ginseng extract, and natural flavor. Most importantly, it doesn’t contain high fructose corn syrup.

"As cannabis continues to legalize, hemp is a wonder plant with never ever benefits, and it will continue to integrate in consumer products like RMHB."

Excessive alcohol intake can harm the body’s immune system in two ways. First, it produces an overall nutritional deficiency, depriving the body of valuable immune boosting nutrients. Second, alcohol, like sugar, consumed in excess can reduce the ability of white cells to kill germs. High doses of alcohol suppress the ability of the white blood cells to multiply, inhibit the action of killer white cells on cancer cells, and lessen the ability of maCrophages to produce tumor necrosis factors.

The research, carried out at the University Hospital Basel, was published, Jan. 16, in the journal Nature Immunology, and addresses the series of reactions taking place in the human body, both for healthy and overweight people. When it comes to people who suffer from diabetes, this substance causes chronic inflammation, thus killing the cells responsible for the production of insulin. IL-1 and insulin increased the uptake of glucose into maCrophages, and insulin reinforced a pro-inflammatory pattern via the insulin receptor, glucose metabolism, production of reactive oxygen species, and secretion of IL-1 mediated by the NLRP3 inflammasome, noted the research.

Key Takeaways:

  • Along with the food digested every time we have a meal, an additional series of immune reactions takes place in the human body
  • The fact that type 2 diabetes leads to chronic inflammation has been scientifically confirmed for a long time

Subject: Demand for CBD still outstrips supply despite production expansion, hemp grower says

Industrial hemp is an industry that is apparently booming both in supply and demand. A grower based company in Kentucky reported that about two million dollars was paid to growers for the 2016 Crop. But despite this, the demand for industrial hemp still far exceeds the supply, according to an officer from the company.

Key Takeaways:

  • The supply of industrial hemp is ramping up quickly, as a company formed by growers in Kentucky reported $2 million in payments to farmers for the 2016 Crop. But demand for CBD still far outstrips supply, a company officer said.
  • The company, called Atalo Holdings Inc. a diversified industrial hemp research and production company in Winchester, KY., announced the payouts to their growers’ group yesterday. The company’s officers are all also growers themselves.
  • Atalo claims to be one of the largest hemp companies operating in the US. For the 2016 growing year, the company has 58 growers enlisted in the program with 2,466 acres approved for hemp production.

Stocking up on non-perishable foods seems like an intelligent concept on the surface. But upon closer examination, it may prove that they stored food you buy contains genetically-modified organisms and additives that are toxic to your system. Transgenic corn, corn startch and high-fructose corn syrup are widely used in storable foods, but are nto organic products and are derivatives of "FrankenCrops." Many popular brands that sell packaged food use these subtances to increae the shelf life of the food, but the presence of these chemicals in concerning.

Key Takeaways:

  • many people are preparing in advance by stocking up on storable food supplies to back end any potential hiccups in the supply chain. But it's important to remember that not all storable food is the same, and that much of it is actually loaded with things you probably wouldn't want to feed your families – things like genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) and toxic food additives.
  • If you're someone who's already purchased storable food, you might want to take a closer look at the ingredients list to determine whether or not you've made the right choice. If you haven't yet purchased storable food but are interested in doing so, there are excellent options like Numanna Organic Survival Food that are both free of these offending ingredients and surprisingly healthy and nutritious.

Subject: Say NO to GMO in America

Coming from over 50 countries, countless millions of people have expressed their disapproval over attempted corporate ownership of plant seeds through GMO (genetically modified organisms). Having said that, the corporations involved have assured the public that GMO is safe and want us to believe that it's more efficient at feeding the world by giving higher yields and have greater resistance to extreme weather conditions.

Safety of GMO

According to a growing number of scientists such as world leading expert Dr Don Huber GMO expert, professor of plant pathology at Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, USA, there has been NO peer reviewed evidence to support the idea that GMO Crops are safe. On the contrary, a vast catalogue of scientific evidence has built up over the years showing that GMO is unsafe.

Public consumption of genetically modified Crops have been accused of causing ill health in the form of allergies, cancer, birth defects and infertility. It also includes toxicity, reduced nutritional value, environmental damage and political unrest such as that with farmer's and consumer's disputes.

The Revolving Door Effect

Approval bodies like the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) decide whether or not a food or drug is fit to go out on the market for consumption.  GMO is not safe. Nor has it shown to produce higher yield, greater nutritional value or resist drought conditions better than non-GMO according to many experts such as Professor John Fagan, award-winning Geneticist, Maharishi University of Management, Iowa, USA.

Yes, of course we should say NO to GMO. It is spurred on by corporate greed and political self interest with more than its fair share of hidden ulterior motives. The technology is unimaginably potentially dangerous and could be perceived as one of the biggest threats to humanity if allowed to get out of control.

Common survival and storable foods are may not be the healthiest foods to keep for long term health. It seems that many of these foods are loaded with unhealthy additions like MSG and pesticides. Almost all of these products contain corn and soybean in one form or another and most of those Crops are genetically modified. Luckily, there are some healthier alternatives out there that don’t contain such toxic ingredients.

Subject: When to Take Your Vitamins: Timing is Key to Effectiveness

The ideal method of getting necessary vitamins and minerals is through natural foods and juices. In most cases the modern diet does not provide all of the key nutrients needed for healthy living, so many people turn to vitamins and supplements. The effectiveness of these additions are often dependent on when they are taken and whether they are taken with or without food.

Key Takeaways:

  • “The best way to get all your nutrients is from food,” notes Dr. Ellen Kamhi, a medical school instructor and author of "The Natural Medicine Chest."
  • “But of course there is a large amount of scientific evidence that supports the use of supplements. There are many instances when your diet isn’t sufficient to provide all the necessary nutrients because of toxic growing conditions, the chemicals used in GMO Crops, or simply poor eating habits.
  • “The calcium will most likely be absorbed but will block the absorption of magnesium,” she tells Newsmax Health. “And if you take iron supplements, avoid ferrous sulfate. Choose ferrous chelate or fumerate instead.”

Subject: What are the Health Benefits of Beta-Glucans

mushroom beta-glucan

What are Beta-glucans?

Beta glucan is a biological response modifier that nutritionally activates the immune response through the Dendritic, MaCrophage and other immune cells to produce various therapeutic effects.

Beta-glucans are sugars found in the cell walls of algae, fungi, lichens, bacteria, yeasts, and plants, such as oats and barley. They can be use as medicine.

Benefits of beta-glucan

Beta-glucans are use for cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and high cholesterol. Beta-glucans are also use for boosting the immune system in people whose body defenses have been weakens by emotional or physical stress, chronic fatigue syndrome or by treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation. Beta-glucans are also used for ulcerative colitis, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, aging, H1N1 flu, Lyme disease, allergies, fibromyalgia, ear infections, rheumatoid, asthma and crohn's disease.

Beta-glucans is applied to the skin for wrinkles, dermatitis, burns, eczema, bedsores, radiation burns, wounds and diabetic ulcers.

Beta-glucans can be given by injection into the muscle or intravenously to boost the immune system in people with HIV/AIDS and related conditions and to treat cancer. Beta glucans are also given intravenously to prevent infection in people who have undergone surgery.

Beta-glucans can be given by subcutaneously for reducing the size of skin tumors or for treating them.

In the food industry, beta-glucans are used as an additive in products such as cheese spreads, frozen desserts, salad dressings and sour cream.

Adding beta-glucans to your diet either in form of foods that contain the compound or in form of food supplements plays a significant role in boosting your immune system to help your body fight diseases.

How does beta-glucans work?

When taken by mouth, Beta-glucans lower blood cholesterol by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol from food in the intestines and stomach. Beta-glucans stimulate the immune system by increasing chemicals that prevent infections when given by injection.

Studies by leading scientists and medical experts have shown that Beta-glucans act as immunomodulator agents by triggering events that regulate and increase the efficiency of the immune system. Beta-glucans stimulate the activity of immune cells that attack and ingest invading pathogens.

Immune cells such as MaCrophages release cytokines that are chemicals that enable immune cells to communicate with each other. In addition, Beta-glucans increase the activity of white blood cells that bind to viruses or tumors, and release chemicals to destroy it. Beta-glucan is a biological response modifier that nutritionally activates the immune response through the Dendritic, MaCrophage and other immune cells to produce various therapeutic effects.

The potential side effects of Beta-glucan when taken by mouth are unknown. When used by injection, Beta-glucans can cause fever, pain at the injection site, chills, vomiting, headache, nausea, dizziness, rashes, diarrhea, back pain, joint pain and low blood pressure.

Where does Beta-glucan come from?

The body does not produce Beta-glucan naturally; you can only get it from outside sources such as shiitake mushrooms, baker’s yeast and cereal grains such as wheat, oats, barley and rye.

The most potent form of beta glucan is extracted as a purified isolate from the yeast cell wall of Baker's yeast with harmful yeast proteins removed by a process that prevent clumping or reaggregation after exposure to water during digestion. Research has shown that Beta- glucan is a safe and potent immune potentiation isolate.

allium cepaWhat is allium cepa?

Allium Cepa was originally native to central Asia; however, nowadays it has a global geographic range. It made its way to Egypt through trade, where it became an important food Crop in the ancient world. Because the Allium cepa was a cheap food source, Egyptian slave workers, those who built the pyramids, ate them on a daily basis. Additionally, it was illustrated in the funerary images in tombs. Ancient Sumerians commonly cultivate and cooked Allium cepa 4,000 years ago.

Benefits of allium cepa

Allium Cepa is extremely valued for its healing qualities. It has been utilized as a food cure from time immemorial. Research illustrates that Allium Cepa may help protect against several chronic diseases. That is possible because the plant contains generous quantities of the flavonoid quercetin. Research has also shown that quercetin guards against cardiovascular disease, cancer and cataracts. Additionally, Allium Cepa contains various other naturally occurring chemicals called organic sulfur compounds, which have been associated with lowering cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Even though the plant is seldom used specifically as a medicinal herb, it has a wide variety of helpful actions on the body and when regularly consumed (particularly raw), it will help the body’s health.

When consumed frequently in the diet, Allium Cepa offsets tendencies towards arteriosclerosis, heart attack and angina. This is used mostly in the healing of individuals whose symptoms include running nose and eyes. Allium cepa’s ability to ease congestions particularly in the bronchial tract and lungs is hard to accept until you have truly seen the results. The drawing of congestion, infection and colds is also remarkable. The Allium Cepa will ease stomach upset as well as other gastrointestinal ailments and it will improve the appetite. The plant is found in every household and therefore is easily accessible. The purple-skinned plant tastes great. In addition, it has numerous health gains and is part of several beauty solutions and home remedies.

What Is GMO and Why Should We Avoid It?

Subject: What Is GMO and Why Should We Avoid It?

Cause of GMO

gmoGMO's have been classified by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine as unhealthy, they were able to prove that GMO when ingested can cause organ damage, gastrointestinal as well as immune system disorders. This is due to the fact that GMO contains materials that are left behind the body, it can cause long term problems like accelerated aging as well as infertility. The genes inserted into a genetically modified Crop like corn, can get transferred into the DNA of bacteria that is living inside the human body, this interaction can lead to a number of long term health problems.

Negative effects of genetically modified products have been observed in 1996, this was due to the number of Americans expressing a number of illnesses after consuming foods that have been engineered for 9 years.

Allergies increased including digestive problems and autism, while other research has yet to support this claim, many non-profit organizations such as Greenpeace are already making campaigns against the production of GMO infused Crops and meat.

What are the other negative impacts of GMO?

1. Cancer causing components - GMO according to the American Public Health Association and American Nurses Association, have stated that the growth hormone present from cow’s milk treated by hormone IGF-1 can lead to cancer.

2. Long term negative effects on the body - GMO components can contaminate forever, it can cross pollinate, and the seeds can travel. Once it infects a certain area, it can contaminate the entire gene pool. This means, that the health of future generations is already compromised and for this reason, the production has to be stopped right away before it infects more population.

3. Dangerous side effects - the mere process of creation of GMO's can produce toxins, carcinogens, allergens and nutritional deficiencies.

The direct production and consumption is already endangering a number of species including bees.

Many governments continue to remain lax about the issue, GMOs are illegally being sold and created in many countries, and people need to learn as much as they can in order to learn how they can prevent GMO products from entering their market.

The wonder of amaranth

amaranth plantThe wonder grain Amaranth has been known to humans for centuries. It was heralded as a staple in the diets of pre Columbian-Aztecs who heralded the plant is granting them special powers. Unfortunately, when the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in the region, they outlawed the Crop and went to great lengths to push its existence far from common knowledge. It has only resurfaced on the market in recent decades.

Amaranth plant

A broad and bushy plant, amaranth can grow to around six feet in height. It sports a bright and colorful flower head which contains an immense amount of seeds. It is not uncommon for a single plant to produce seed quantities around the 60,000 mark. The seeds are typically used in the creation of amaranth cereal or flour.

The plant itself is not technically a grain, belonging instead to the same plant family as beets, spinach and quinoa. This classification is the reason it offers nutritional benefits that are closer to those offered by darker, greener plants with more foliage rather than those of true grains. Amaranth plays host to a myriad of different nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. One amino acid in particular, lysine, which is generally present in fairly low levels in other grains, appears in a noticeably higher concentration here. Compared to wheat, Amaranth also carries four times as much calcium and double the content of iron and magnesium. It also boasts an exceptionally high level of protein.

Uses of amaranth

This miracle plant can be prepared with a wide variety of techniques. It can be simmered to produce a consistency not unlike porridge. It can also be mixed with other grains to create a dish that resembles rice. Traditionalists can also toss the grains in a skillet to be cooked like popcorn, producing a crunchy, almost nutty experience. While still not yet immensely popular and therefor sometimes harder to find, amaranth can be an excellent addition to any healthy diet.

mushroomWhat is Beta Glucan

Beta glucan, precisely 1-3, 1-6-beta-glucan or Beta 1, 3/1, 6 Glucan is defined as sugar (glucose) or a naturally occurring polysaccharide that is extracted from bacteria, fungi, yeast and mushroom cell walls, the fiber of oats, rye, wheat as well as barley and cellulose from plants. It can well be described as an immunostimulant or immunomodulator agent which stimulates the body miCrophages to produce cytokines and fight disease causing pathogens in order to boost the immune system of the body.

Beta Gluan Source

Since beta glucan is got from natural food sources such as shiitake mushrooms, it is a natural way to enhance the performance of the white blood cells in fighting diseases. It helps in the reduction of the cholesterol level from the body and it is the key to a Low Density Lipoprotein, which is essential in boosting the immune system of the body. For individuals whose immune systems have been greatly lowered by HIV/AIDS, stress or other conditions, this supplement is the way to go in restoration of their immune systems

In addition, beta glucan acts as an anti-carcinogenic substance which reduces the risk of suffering from the much dreaded cancer disease. It is also essential in keeping diabetes, hepatitis and cardiovascular diseases at bay. Beta glucan also inhibits tumor growth and proliferation and Lyme disease

What are some Benefits of Beta Glucan

Broadly speaking, beta glucan improves the overall ability of the body to resist various infections such as burns, common cold, asthma, allergies, ear infections and multiple sclerosis, to mention but a few. It is also an effective weight loss dietary supplement, and given that weight loss is the current health and fitness mantra, the use for beta glucan has is rampant in the contemporary world. To add color to the already good package, it is has mild or no side effects depending on the user.

Subject: GLUCOSAMINE: Origin and Action of Mechanism

Glucosamine is an amino sugar made from glucose and amino acid glutamine. It is a monosaccharide that is found naturally in healthy joints, cartilages, ligaments, muscles and tendons. It helps in the formation and repair of cartilage and other body tissues. Glucosamine is available in the form of dietary supplements, cosmetics and sports drinks. Let us find out about the history of glucosamine and its role in repair and treatment of joint disorders.

HISTORY of GLUCOSAMINE:

Glucosamine was first discovered in 1876 by Dr. Georg Ledderhose. It was prepared by hydrolysis of chitin with Hydrochloric acid. Later on it was developed in sulphate blend. Since then, it has been studied multiple times and in multiple ways to find out its potent health benefits. It has been used clinically in Europe since 1960s. In 1971, researcher K. Karzel glucosamine HCl stimulated the production of glycosaminoglycan layer, which helps in protecting cartilages, ligaments and tendons from normal wear and tear. It became popular in United States in the mid 1990s with the publication of popular bestsellers such as 'The Arthritis Cure' by Jason Theodosakis. Now it has become the most popular selling dietary supplement with sales of $200 million per year.

Glucosamine is naturally found in the body and can be synthetically made from the natural sources of chitin that is found in sea creatures such as shells of shell fish, bones and bone marrow.

How does Glucosamine Works in reducing Joint pain?

Our body's ability to produce glucosamine decreases as we age. Hence after any kind of injury cartilage, spinal discs and joints, the body may not be able to heal optimally. Aging and glucosamine depletion in the body leads to joint degradation. However, glucosamine supplementation can support cartilage and CT-integrity limiting degeneration.

Glucosamine supplements do not work like NSAIDS, which are known to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects on the body. The exact mechanism of significant analgesic effect of glucosamine supplements is unknown but according to various studies, glucosamine has no effect on cyclooxygenase system. Studies have shown that glucosamine stimulates synthesis of proteoglycan in a dose dependent manner. It helps in stimulating the production of cartilaginous matrix, hence counteracting the degrading loss of cartilage in case of arthritis or injury.

Several important studies demonstrate the role of glucosamine in stabilizing cell membranes, inhibit lysosomal enzymes and reduce the generation of oxygen free radicals by maCrophages. It may inhibit interleukin 1 induced nitric oxide activity that leads to chondriotic cell death. Hence it increases aggrecanase activity that helps in preservation of proteoglycan.

Glucosamine along with Chondroitin sulphate stimulates synthesis of cartilage precursors as well as synovial fluid. They also limit the degradation of existing cartilage in any loss of joint integrity.

This non rapid acting drug has many beneficial effects in reducing the symptoms of osteoarthritis. It is a powerful joint repairing supplement that rebuilds joint cartilage. Glucosamine supplements have been thoroughly evaluated to find out any potential side-effects. However, it has been proved that it does not have any of the side-effects of NSAIDS, surgery or opiods.

Subject: Can Iodine And Potassium Be Used For Thyroid Health?

Thyroid Hormone Production

The thyroid gland basically is the part of the body that produces thyroid hormones as the its name suggests. It could be found in the neck right around the front area, somewhere around the thyroid cartilage which is more familiar to us as the adam’s apple. The primary function of the thyroid hormone is to regulate and maintain proper metabolism. I addition it also extends its purpose to processes like energy conversion for the body and the body’s processing of other hormones and vitamins to stimulate proper growth and maturation. Commonly when we refer to thyroid disorders, we refer to thyroid production being out of balance. It could either be too high or too low. In the case of overproduction of these hormones an overactive thyroid is usually the culprit and this is called hyperthyroidism. In the case of underproduction caused by an underactive thyroid the disorder is called hypothyroidism.

Thyroid issues also have been noted to be more prevalent in women than in men. The production of these hormones although done actually by the thyroid the process does not start there. The hormone synthesis process which will eventually produce thyroid hormones begin in the part of the brain called the hypothalamus. This is where the TSH or thyroid stimulating hormone is being released from and it then is transported to the thyroid gland via the blood. Then the two thyroid hormones, L-thyroxine or T4, and triidothyronine or T3 are produced. In this process, it is important that regulation occurs and when any disruption happens this is where the imbalances start, either overproduction or underproduction of the hormones occur. A gland known as the pituitary is the key to all this, also located in the brain it can sense how much hormones are in the blood and adjust accordingly to maintain this delicate balance.

Iodine and the Thyroid

Worldwide the most common cause of any thyroid disorder is iodine deficiency. Ample amounts of dietary iodine are needed to produce the thyroid hormones. It is important that we get the correct amount of iodine from our diets, it is so essential that in the US many food products are fortified with iodine and the reason being is that iodine in natural food sources alone are not enough since our food whether it be Crops or meat gets its iodine from the soil and our soil is low in iodine content thus the fortification of many of our food products to avoid any thyroid disorders.

Potassium and the Thyroid

Potassium is a very important mineral in the body to maintain good health. It is an important electrolyte and help conduct electricity in the body. In terms of its link with thyroid health, numerous studies have shown that there is an association between low potassium levels and thyroid issues especially hyperthyroidism and in more severe cases it even has been found to be the cause of an overactive thyroid and as such potassium supplementation has been commonly used as treatment to provide relief.

Subject: What Is the Life Span Of Human Cells And How Do Antioxidants Help?

Antioxidant Multi-Plex 60ctThe human body is composed of many different cells. These cells have varying functions as well as life span. The human cells, in general, are very complex. Some cells may last only within a day while others may be for life. Like for example, one blood component known as neutrophil lasts only within 24 hours. On the other hand, another blood component which is red blood cell has a life span of 120 days. One human cell which lasts for a lifetime is the stem cell. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells which are the source of blood cells. They supply the body throughout life both with red and white blood cells. Here is a brief outline of some cells of the human body with their corresponding life spans.

1. Granulocytes such as eosinophils, basophils and neutrophils – half day to 3 days

2. Stomach and colon lining cells – 2 to 4 days

3. Sperm cells – 2 to 3 days

4. Epithelial cells of the small intestines – 5 to 7 days

5. Platelets – 10 days

6. Skin epidermal cells – 14 to 28 days

7. Lymphocytes, maCrophages and endothelial cells – 2 months to a year, but may vary

8. Pancreatic cells – a year or more

9. Bone cells – 25 to 30 years

As shown above, these human cells have an expected time of death. However, if the body is exposed to harmful toxins, their life span significantly decreases. As we know for a fact, the body undergoes many biological reactions almost every second. The reaction is called oxidation process which is essential to the body. However, such reaction has harmful by – products in the form of free radicals. Free radicals can cause the body significant damage. Free radicals can cause destruction and death of the healthy cells of the body and also affect the body’s cellular division. This kind of chemicals can potentially tamper DNA replication during cell division. Once cellular division is tampered, abnormal growths would likely happen. Aside from the naturally occurring free radicals, external stressors can also cause damage to the cells of the body. Some of these include pollutants, harmful chemicals and irritants. These harmful chemicals can potentially lead to the development of certain disease conditions such as heart diseases, stroke and cancer.

Fortunately, there are many antioxidants which can greatly help in the prevention of free radical damage by protecting the cells of the body. Antioxidants are molecules which can effectively prevent the oxidation of other molecules. There are many natural antioxidants found among plants and animals. Some common antioxidants are glutathione, vitamin C and vitamin E. Other nutrients which have antioxidative property include beta – carotene, lutein, lycopene, vitamin A and selenium. Fruits and vegetables are great sources of antioxidants. Nuts, grains, meat, poultry products and fish are also good sources of such cell – protecting chemicals. In addition, dietary supplements of antioxidants are also widely available in the market. However, health experts highly suggest that before supplementation of antioxidants, medical evaluation must be done first to be completely safe.

Fenugreek And Your Health

Fenugreek is a plant which is considered to be both an herb and a spice. The plant can be found all over the world as a Crop or spice and has become popular as an herbal medicine. This plant is a primary ingredient among many curry dishes. This herb is considered to be one of the oldest medicinal herbs.

The seeds of Fenugreek are abundant with the chemical called polysaccharide galactomannan. This is the reason why fenugreek herb is considered to be a galactagogue. Galactagogues are chemical compounds which intensifies lactation among humans and other mammals. Galactagogues may either be naturally derived from plants or synthetic. Fenugreek seeds are commonly employed by nursing mothers to help increase the production of breast milk. Studies reveal that fenugreek extracts effectively stimulates the mammary glands to produce milk. In addition, because of its estrogen – like property, fenugreek herb is employed at home as supplement for breast enlargement. Commonly, consuming three grams of fenugreek seed daily is suggested by health experts.

Another important health benefit of fenugreek herb extracts is that it has a potent anti – diabetic property cause of its positive effect on the metabolic symptoms related with Diabetes Mellitus, both type 1 and type 2. Preliminary studies on animals reveal that it can significantly lower serum glucose level and enhance one’s tolerance to glucose. Further studies on human subjects are still ongoing.

Fenugreek also contains an important body nutrient called Choline. This chemical is a member of the water – soluble vitamin B complex which is involved in so many body activities. Together with its metabolic end – products, choline plays a significant role as a precursor of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter is required for a successful cholinergic neurotransmission of the nervous system. At the cellular level, choline is one of the components of the structure of the cell membranes. Choline also improves the signaling activities of cell membranes to other cells and its surrounding environment. Not to mention, choline is also a good source of methyl groups which is needed in many biological reactions.

Studies also reveal that fenugreek herb is effective in lowering cholesterol levels at about 15 %. To acquire this effect, experts often recommend that you take about 55 to 65 grams of fenugreek seed everyday. If cholesterol levels are maintained within normal limits, the risk for cardiovascular diseases most especially heat attack is lowered.

Fenugreek supplements may come in the form of capsules, powered seeds, tinctures or teas. The recommended dosing of fenugreek supplements is two to four 600 – milligram capsule three times daily. Experts state that the maximum dose per day is six grams. For the powdered fenugreek seeds, the recommended dose is about one – half to one teaspoon taken three times daily. You may combine the powder with little water or juice to add a little taste. For the tea preparation, consume one cup of tea two to three times a day while for tinctures, use one to two milliliters of fenugreek concentrate three times daily.

Give fenugreek a try and feel the difference!

Fenugreek seed and your health

Fenugreek seed is a spice often added to curries and other Indian dishes. It is a good source of protein and nutrients. In folk medicine, it has been used in the treatment of pain and irritation characteristic of inflammation. It is historically utilized to promote lactation. More recent studies have shown that it displays antiviral properties. In particular, it has been tested in allaying symptoms of cold infections.

Trigonella foenum-graecum is a plant species that belongs to the legume family. As such, it has been cultivated as a vegetable even before the ancient times. It is believed to be an indigenous species of the Fertile Crescent, a historic region that comprises the modern countries Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria. To this day, it remains an important Crop, herb, and food source in these countries.

Combats Diabetes Mellitus

Fenugreek seed has been the subject of scientific research in the past few years. Drawing on its use in traditional medicine, it has been employed in the management of blood sugar. It improves the effect of the hormone insulin in regulating glucose levels. In fact, it has shown great potential in treating both type I insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and type II noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

Alters Blood Lipid Profile

The phytochemical content of fenugreek seed enables it to effectively lower cholesterol levels in the blood. Clinical trials have recorded changes in lipids present in the systemic circulation after intake of fenugreek seed products. It is now postulated that it blocks the metabolic pathway for the synthesis of low density lipoproteins or bad cholesterol. Some sources say that it raises good cholesterol levels.

Red Marine Algae And Your Health.

Red marine algae refer to a large group of seaweeds that contain phycobiliproteins, which give them their red coloration. They are simple organisms in that they do not have complex tissues in contrast with terrestrial plants. Many species of red marine algae plays an important role in the formation of coral reefs as they secrete calcium carbonate as well as provide nutrition for other marine species. Like plants, they are capable of making their own food by way of photosynthesis. And like most other seaweeds, they are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, and other healthy organic compounds.

Scientific Classification

Rhodophyta is the taxonomic classification of all red marine algae. It is oftentimes considered a part of the plant kingdom, but more recent definitions of plant suggest red algae belong to a kingdom of their own. Rhodophyta is one of the largest groups of algae, second only to green algae. It consists of up to 6000 aquatic species that are widely distributed in the tropical, temperate, and even frigid zones. These species usually take up residence along the coastal regions and significantly contribute to the distribution, abundance, and ecology of organisms found in the extended perimeter of each continent.

Historical Uses

Seaweeds have become a part of the staple diet of many communities throughout history, and red marine algae are one of the best sources of human nutrition among all seaweeds. For thousands of years, different species of red algae have enjoyed significant presence in cuisines from all over the world. It is often consumed uncooked or added to salads. It is also an important ingredient in soups and stews. Ocean farmers have learned different techniques of domesticating Crops of algae, and cultivation has been the solution to the growing demand of red marine algae in the past few decades.

Industrial Applications

Red marine algae have steadily grown in economic value since the 20th century. In addition to their historical culinary uses, their application now extends to medical science. Several organic compounds have been isolated from different species of red marine algae are now in wide use in the food and drug industries. For example, gelatinous substances are derived from agarophytes, any species of seaweeds that belong to rhodophyta. These substances are used in the production of beer, food preserves, ice cream as well as papers, fabrics, lubricants, and other personal care products.

Medicinal Value

Red marine algae have a special place in antiviral research. Many species are now identified to contain organic compounds that are of medicinal value against several viruses. Decades-long studies have come to a conclusion that sulfated polysaccharides derived from red marine algae have an inhibitory effect on replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV). There is good evidence that one class of sulfated polysaccharides called carrageenan offer some protection against transmission of herpes. Furthermore, recent studies have revealed that sulfated polysaccharides are potent inhibitors of HIV-1 in cell culture.

Subject: Using Cherries to Deal with Arthritis

Call it what you will: arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or gout - cherries can deal with it and enable you live and sleep more comfortably than without them. When the bones and lubrication systems of your joints become worn you begin to feel pain - not because your bones are grinding against each other but because of the inflammatory response of your immune system.

Your cartilage begins to wear and your body reacts to the damage first by activating cells already close by - maCrophages, mastocytes, dendritic cells and so on, and then calls on the release of leukocytes such as neutrophils. Your blood vessels dilate to enable the large cells to get to the general area of the problem, and then leak to enable fluids to get right to the exact spot where they are needed.

With arthritis, the joint swells because of the above actions, and the synovial fluid can become infected and inflamed. The temperature around the joint increases in temperature to render it less attractive to invading cells and pathogens, and you feel pain because of the pressure on your nerve endings. Then you should take some cherry extract.

The activity of the cytokines and prostaglandins that are creating this situation is suppressed, and the temperature starts to drop. The blood vessels are contracted and the situation begins to return to normal. One more bout of inflammation successfully dealt with, and now that you understand what has caused it you will be better placed to get the cherry extract down your throat next time.

Sprouts For A Healthier Body!

Fresh sprouts are among the healthiest of all foods. They are alfalfa, barley, wheat sproutsrich in enzymes that are not found in the human body. These enzymes help facilitate better absorption of vitamins and minerals. Alfalfa, barley, and wheat are examples of plants that are capable of sprouting when soaked in water. They are best consumed fresh when they still contain all of their nutrients. They make excellent ingredients to salads and sandwiches that can complement any meal. They can be processed in juicing machines, too.

You might have heard of the nutritional value of grasses and legumes. Wheatgrass is becoming increasingly popular nowadays as they have been receiving a lot of good press lately. Wheatgrass and barley grass has in fact earned the moniker superfoods. Alfalfa, on the other hand, is a legume recently rediscovered for its phytochemical content. It has been a forage Crop for centuries, but human consumptions have steadily increased in the past few years. Apart from the fact that wheat, barley, alfalfa can be consumed as fresh sprouts, they also bring similar benefits to human health.

Restore Normal pH Levels

Proponents of the alkaline diet believe that the body is in a constant cycle of alkalinity and acidity, which is partially dependent on the foods that we eat. The body raises alkalinity with every acidic by-products of digestion to maintain pH balance. That being said, a significant fraction of the human diet is acid-forming, tipping the balance in the process. Fresh sprouts are often linked to the alkaline diet, which aims to restore pH balance of the body.

Have High Nutrient Content

Alfalfa, barley grass, and wheatgrass are very good sources of vitamins and minerals. They are particularly rich in dietary minerals that help the body function at its best. Plus, they contain amino acids, essential fatty acids, dietary fiber, and carbohydrates in amounts adequate to complement any other foods that make up a healthy diet. One of the very noticeable improvements after months of consuming fresh sprouts is the increase in red blood cell count.

Cleanse the Body of Toxins

Aside from the fact that fresh sprouts are effective free radical scavengers, they also improve the natural antioxidant defense of the human body. Wheat, barley, and alfalfa are reliable sources of potassium, magnesium, manganese, and selenium, all of which are involved in chemical reactions that lead to effective removal of toxic by-products of metabolism. Fresh sprouts are capable of neutralizing reactive oxygen species such as free radicals. Furthermore, they facilitate the excretion of toxins.

Promote Heart Health

NOW - SPROUTING JARS 1/2 GAL 6/CASEFresh sprouts are particularly good for the cardiovascular system. They maintain the health of red blood cells. They limit the releases of low-density lipoproteins into the blood, thus lowering bad cholesterol and free fatty acids. They help control high blood pressure and promote normal blood flow. They maintain healthy levels of blood sugar by improving glucose metabolism. And, of course, their antioxidant profile enables them to protect the heart and arterial walls from lipid peroxidation.

Subject: Is AHCC Good for the Immune System? How So?

AHCC And Immune Health

Active Hexose Correlated Compound, or AHCC, is one of the most commonly used food supplements in Japan largely owing to its effective immune-boosting properties when successfully absorbed by the human body. The earliest important study concerning its activities in the immune system was published in the early 1990’s at Tokyo University, triggering a sudden rise in popularity among consumers in Japan, where it is sold over the counter.

Activates White Blood Cells

It has been observed in the past few years that AHCC boosts the immune system in many different ways in that it participates not only in the innate immune system but also in the adaptive immune system. Of special note is the significant increase in certain types of white blood cells, including natural killer cells, or NK, and maCrophages. NK cells are in the employ of the innate immune system and responsible for the disposal of cells infected by viruses. They are often the first line of defense against common viruses such as herpes, containing the damage that viral infection spreads while waiting for specified mechanisms of the adaptive immune system. This is when maCrophages come into play along with a cohort of lymphocytes. Their relatively bigger size allows them to effectively engulf pathogenic cells and the enzymes they contain break these pathogens down.

Removes Antigens and Toxins

AHCC also influences the production of antigen presenting cells, or APC. In a double-blind, placebo controlled study involving healthy individuals there was a significant increase in the quantities of APC, notably dendritic cells, in comparison with the baseline, and proteins released by lymphocytes called interferon. Both APC and interferon facilitate the detection of antigens and toxins created by invasive foreign bodies and alert the rest of the immune system of their presence. Dendritic cells are considered the most important group of all APCs in that they present a wide range of antigen presentation by way of phagocytosis or endocytosis, two different ways of catching antigens. By so doing, they make it easier for white blood cells to eliminate antigens and other toxic substances.

Defends against Cancer Cells

Cancer patients are the group of individuals that have benefited the most from AHCC. Early studies yielded data that are now being used to enhance the quality of life of those diagnosed with cancer. Indeed boosting the immune system has proven to play a part in the battle against cancer, and AHCC stimulates the immune system to manufacture a class of white blood cells that actively defend the body against cancer cells by causing tumor cells to die and on the same principle delay the proliferation of malignant cells.

There have been extensive clinical trials well underway in many countries, including China, South Korea, Thailand, Spain, and the US. These studies aim to that rigorously test its efficacy. In fact, AHCC belongs to the group of nutritional products tied to alternative medicine that has been supported by an abundance of data in connection with its safety and recommended dosages.

If you are battling disease, give AHCC a try.

Subject: Why Do We Need Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) And What Source Is Best?

EFA's can boost Your Health

Essential fatty acids are organic compounds that the human body necessitates to support healthy functions of organs and tissues but lack the ability to synthesize. Two fatty acids make up this group: (1) alpha linolenic acid, or ALA, and (2) linoleic acid, LA. Also referred to as EFAs, they are ubiquitous at the cellular level, but known to play an active role in neuronal and vascular tissues as well as in inflammation.

Maintains Cellular Health

One of the most recent advancements in cellular science is the discovery of lipid rafts, which are a part of the bilipid layer of cell membranes specialized for trafficking of cellular molecules, such as proteins and receptors. Also, these lipid rafts have an effect on the viscosity of cell membranes, thereby influencing fluidity that governs membrane-dependent functions of cells such as cellular signaling and phagocytosis, the mechanism by which cells swallow extracellular debris including pathogenic stimuli. Due to its being less stiff and more fluid, essential fatty acids make up cell membranes.

Modulates Neuronal Activities

It has long been postulated that learning and memory is influenced by the availability of intracellular substances known as endocannabinoids in a process called retrograde signaling. Unlike other neurotransmitters, endocannabinoids act on presynaptic cells while produced in postsynaptic cells, and by so doing enhances the signal transmission between nerve cells. Essential fatty acids are converted into endocannabinoids, which are produced on demand, and thus daily intake of EFA is a must. In addition, EFA has for years been in use as a treatment for depression and in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.

Regulates Inflammatory Responses

The right amounts of essential fatty acids present inside the human body significantly contribute to the inflammatory responses of the immune system. There are chemical compounds that are produced by the body only in the presence of essential fatty acids, and a number of these compounds are essential to the process of healing and other processes implicated during inflammation. This is the reason why intake of EFA is highly regarded as a therapeutic remedy for reducing inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and autoimmune illnesses.

Promotes Cardiovascular Health

There is high risk of heart attack and related cardiovascular diseases in populations with low levels of essential fatty acids. Especially for individuals who are dependent on drugs that are known to cause oxidative stress in vascular tissues, susceptibility to damages of the blood vessel linings sets the stage for the buildup of maCrophages and bad cholesterol in the form of arterial plaques. These plaques contribute to the thinning of the vascular passageways characteristic of atherosclerosis.

There is a reason why alpha linolenic acid and linoleic acid are considered essential fatty acids. They are a vital component of a healthy body with well-functioning organs and tissues. Good thing we have a wide list of food sources rich in EFA, which includes the oils of hemp, soya, canola, and wheat germ. EFA is also abundant in seeds of sunflower, chia, pumpkin, and flax.

EFA's should be an essential part of everyone's diet, have you had your EFA's today?
