Date:
May 24, 2024 03:28 PM
The Role of Vitamin D in Immune HealthVitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining a robust immune system, acting as a vital nutrient that supports overall health. Unlike other vitamins, vitamin D functions as a hormone, interacting with various bodily systems to help modulate the immune response. This essential vitamin aids in the activation of T cells, which are critical for identifying and combating pathogens.
Sources of Vitamin DTo ensure adequate levels of vitamin D, it is important to consider both dietary sources and sunlight exposure. Foods rich in vitamin D include fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, fortified dairy products, and egg yolks. Additionally, sensible sun exposure enables the body to synthesize vitamin D naturally. However, factors such as geographic location, skin pigmentation, and the use of sunscreen can influence the amount of vitamin D produced by the skin. Make sure to supplement Vitamin D in a D-3 form for optimal absorption in your vitamin regimen.
Optimal Levels and SupplementationMaintaining optimal levels of vitamin D is important for immune health. Blood tests can determine vitamin D levels, with health professionals often recommending supplementation to address deficiencies. The right amount of vitamin D supplements varies depending on individual needs. Follow healthcare providers' guidelines to prevent potential toxicity from excessive intake.
Vitamin D and Immune ResponseResearch has shown that adequate levels of vitamin D are associated with a reduced risk of infections and improved immune function. Vitamin D enhances the pathogen-fighting effects of monocytes and macrophages—white blood cells that are important parts of immune defense—and decreases inflammation. This helps the body to fend off illnesses more effectively and recover quicker.
Public Health ConsiderationsPublic health organizations emphasize the importance of maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels for overall health. It is recommended to regularly monitor high-risk groups such as older adults, individuals with limited sun exposure, and those with specific medical conditions. Understanding the significance of vitamin D can improve health and boost the immune system. It is advised to get blood work twice a year to monitory vitamin D levels and supplement accordingly. In summary, vitamin D is indispensable for a well-functioning immune system. Ensuring adequate intake through diet, sunlight, and supplementation as needed can provide beneficial effects on health and enhance the body's ability to combat illness.
Take Action to Boost Your Immune HealthUnderstanding vitamin D's crucial role in supporting a healthy immune system, it's crucial to take proactive steps to ensure sufficient intake. Include vitamin D-rich foods like fatty fish, fortified dairy, and egg yolks in your diet. Consider D-3 supplements and aim for safe sun exposure to boost vitamin D levels. Don't hesitate to seek advice from healthcare providers regarding supplementation, especially if you fall into a higher-risk category for deficiency. Regular blood tests can help you monitor your vitamin D levels and adjust your intake accordingly. By Stay informed, take action, boost your immune health, lower infection risks, and improve overall well-being. Act now to incorporate these practices into your daily routine and fortify your body's natural defenses.

Date:
April 16, 2019 10:53 AM
Metabolic syndrome involves a combination of at least three out of five conditions — hypertension, abdominal obesity, low “good cholesterol,” and excessively high fasting blood glucose and serum triglyceride scores. Metabolic syndrome is a major public health concern, given that more than a third of American adults have it. Recent studies suggest that eating too much saturated fat can imbalance the bacteria in the gut. This results over time in oxidative stress and inflammation that can deplete the body’s stockpiles of vitamins C and E, and also make it harder to absorb more vitamin C from food to replace what has been used up. Vitamins C and E play an important role in protecting against oxidative stress. Key Takeaways:
"Around 35% of the American adult population has metabolic syndrome, with a higher prevalence in older age groups." Read more: https://www.medicalnewsbulletin.com/poor-gut-health-vitamin-c-e-metabolic-syndrome/

December 16, 2017 03:59 PM
Thomas McDermott, a Democrat and the Mayor of Hammond, Indiana, brought up the legality of using cannabidiol oil (CBD) for treating his Labrador retriever's arthritis at the BGD Legislative Conference in Indianapolis. At the conference was Republican Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill who last month stated that the use of CBD was illegal in most circumstances in his state after a bill passed to allow epilepsy patients to legally use the oil for seizures. McDermott questioned Hill using a story about his dog that suffered from arthritis, noting that his vet recommended using CBD oil to treat the pain. He mentioned that the oil allowed his dog to move around more easily, had more energy, and had improved appetite. McDermott thought aloud that Hill was "grandstanding" on CBD, but Hill simply stated he was following the law as it was written. When McDermott asked if his dog was breaking the law, Hill responded that the Mayor himself was breaking the law - not the dog. McDermott was upset afterwards that Hill accused him for being a criminal for treating his dog with CBD, and he has no plans to change the therapy for his dog. Key Takeaways:

Date:
December 10, 2017 03:59 PM
Veterinarians, researchers and pet owners are looking to loosen federal regulations on the use of marijuana products to help treat sick animals. Medical issues in dogs, such as epilepsy, arthritis, anxiety, loss of appetite and inflammation could potentially by helped by marijuana-based drugs and extracts. Some people are already using marijuana extracts on their animals, such as those containing CBD, which is an element of marijuana that is not psychoactive. However, such extracts continue to be listed as Schedule 1 drugs by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, even when they contain little or no THC. THC is the active component in marijuana that causes intoxication. The Food and Drug Administration has warned that marijuana products for pets sold in animal hospitals or online pet stores are illegal, since such drugs are unapproved. The FDA has suggested it will pursue legal action against those in violation of the law. However, the policy-making body of the American Veterinary Medical Association, in conjunction with two group councils, is considering making a recommendation to the DEA for marijuana to be declassified as a Schedule 1 drug in order to enable research for both animal and human medical purposes. Declassification could also help prevent pet owners from accidentally overmedicating their animals in the absence of proper guidance from a medical professional. In September, Republican senator Orrin Hatch of Utah introduced a bill that would facilitate research on use of marijuana-based medications, concurring that the drug is over-regulated, although he continues to oppose recreational use of the drug,. Some veterinarians note that without sufficient evidence, it remains unsafe to use marijuana products on animals, with concerns about potential toxicity. Yet researchers are continuing to wait for clearance to proceed on various relevant studies, such as use of marijuana for dogs with osteoarthritis, pruritis and epilepsy. Some research on use of products with CBD has been stopped until federal approval is granted. Gaining approval has been difficult due to government requirements, which continue to be an obstacle to moving forward. Key Takeaways:
"The concern our membership has is worry about people extrapolating their own dosages, looking to medicate their pets outside the realm of the medical professional" Read more: https://www.aspentimes.com/news/scientists-call-on-feds-to-allow-research-on-cbd-for-pets/

Date:
September 23, 2017 12:14 PM
The University of Chicago has recently announced findings that bee pollen has antimicrobial properties, something that practitioners of natural medicine have known for years. The potential is great but also precarious as pesticide use has drastically decreased the bee population in the last few years. Hopefully science realizes just how important natural remedies are before it is too late. Key Takeaways:

Date:
July 13, 2017 09:14 AM
Addiction to opioids is a huge problem,. It often starts with pain meds. Doctors prescribe opioids for pain and then the patient becomes addicted and needs more and more. This can ruin families and lives. Some believe marijuana can help because that can be used for pain instead. It does help some with pain already. Medicinal marijuana is already allowed in some places and people are swearing by it for pain and other issues. Others say marijuana can be addictive as well, though, so that would create its own problems. Key Takeaways:
"The reality is that the literature right now suggests that if anyone is using an opioid — whether it be a prescription painkiller or something like heroin — a prescription painkiller is more likely [than marijuana] to lead to drug abuse, she says, because it’s more addictive and obviously can be more lethal." June 20, 2017 11:14 AM
Space travel could become a real viable option for most people in the very near future. But, you may ask, what kind of health problems can arise from traveling in outer space? Well, nutrition for one, could be an area of concern in space travel, since most food would consist of re-hydrated food pouches. Fresh foods during space travel are rare, so vitamins are a must to ensure proper health is maintained. Another health concern for a space traveler may be hygiene. While on board a space flight, water is limited. Showering and changing clothes daily may not be an option. Water is precious and even urine is recycled and reused. In addition, a person's mental health will certainly be tested from being in such a small confined area during the journey. Sleeping, as well, takes a little more thought, since falling asleep without being tethered could cause one to be injured or even float away! Lastly, the main health concern would probably be radiation exposure which could lead to cancer or "space brain," a condition that causes brain damage. These areas of health concern would need to be considered before deciding if boarding the next spacecraft is the right choice for your one of a kind vacation in the near future. Happy travels!! Date:
December 05, 2016 10:18 PM
Coming from over 50 countries, countless millions of people have expressed their disapproval over attempted corporate ownership of plant seeds through GMO (genetically modified organisms). Having said that, the corporations involved have assured the Public that GMO is safe and want us to believe that it's more efficient at feeding the world by giving higher yields and have greater resistance to extreme weather conditions. Safety of GMOAccording to a growing number of scientists such as world leading expert Dr Don Huber GMO expert, professor of plant pathology at Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana, USA, there has been NO peer reviewed evidence to support the idea that GMO crops are safe. On the contrary, a vast catalogue of scientific evidence has built up over the years showing that GMO is unsafe.Public consumption of genetically modified crops have been accused of causing ill health in the form of allergies, cancer, birth defects and infertility. It also includes toxicity, reduced nutritional value, environmental damage and political unrest such as that with farmer's and consumer's disputes. The Revolving Door EffectApproval bodies like the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) decide whether or not a food or drug is fit to go out on the market for consumption. GMO is not safe. Nor has it shown to produce higher yield, greater nutritional value or resist drought conditions better than non-GMO according to many experts such as Professor John Fagan, award-winning Geneticist, Maharishi University of Management, Iowa, USA.Yes, of course we should say NO to GMO. It is spurred on by corporate greed and political self interest with more than its fair share of hidden ulterior motives. The technology is unimaginably potentially dangerous and could be perceived as one of the biggest threats to humanity if allowed to get out of control.

The only issue is the cost. While statins are relatively cheap, Repatha costs roughly $14,000 a year and is not covered by prescription insurance. Hopefully, once the drug has gone through more trials, insurers will see its potential and cover some of the costs. Key Takeaways:

November 28, 2016 10:59 AM
According to a study run by the University of Arizona and University of California Los Angeles, the year you were born could say a lot about the strains of influenza to which you are susceptible. And since there is usually a predominant strain of flu for a few decades at a time, it is most likely you7 were exposed to the one that was dominant around the time you were born. Key Takeaways:
"People's birth years can affect their risk of catching certain strains of influenza — probably because their first case of flu somehow sets their immune system .
